James C Wong built and honed his governance, risk and compliance experience and skills in four phases. They were developed over more than 35 years in public accounting; industry; and most recently independent consulting, university teaching, as well as doctoral studies and research.
Starting in external auditing in the USA with the predecessor firm to what is now KPMG, James Wong qualified as a CPA and also worked with the firm in Malaysia and Singapore. After this initial period auditing financial statements, James opted out of promotion to audit partner and took a year off to study for a MBA degree instead.
Following graduate business school in the US, James Wong stayed on to work with a Fortune 500 company in the foodservice and manufacturing industries. During this stage in varied capacities as Internal Auditor, Corporate Controller, and Treasurer, he gained valuable exposure to operational issues. With this industry experience, James qualified for and earned the Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) credential.
In phase three and armed with industry experience, James Wong rejoined KPMG Singapore as Partner, Risk Advisory Services. In his capacity as Practice Leader, James started and headed the internal audit practice. He was also selected by KPMG US as the engagement partner on internal audit and partner audit engagements in the Asia-Pacific region covering several of their clients in the technology industry. This time of further exposure to risk advisory and assurance matters qualified James for the Certification in Risk Management Assurance (CRMA).
The fourth phase of James Wong’s professional career kicked off with early retirement from KPMG Singapore to prepare for entrepreneurship. In this period, James engaged in independent risk assurance consulting to smaller listed companies. Additionally, he was on the adjunct faculty at the School of Accountancy, Singapore Management University. Furthermore, James studied part time in RMIT University’s offshore programme for the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) degree.
Now into the fifth phase of entrepreneurial pursuits, Dr James C Wong is committed to establish, build and grow the Axcelasia brand in Singapore starting with the Group’s business consultancy practice. As the MD of Axcelasia Singapore, James Wong will work towards expanding the Singapore operations to include tax advisory and business support services in due course.
